Operating systems for VPS
Overview of operating systems offered for virtual servers
When you order a virtual server it is possible to choose any of the pre-installed operating systems based on Linux or Microsoft Windows Server.
There are the following Linux distributions:
- CentOS 6.5
- Fedora 18
- Fedora 19
- Debian 6.0.5
- Debian 7.0
- openSUSE 12.2
- Ubuntu 12.04
It is always just a basic installation without additional software. The customer has access to the server with full rights via SSH as root.
Also available is the package Debian 6.0 ISP it contains pre-installed Apache, PHP, MySQL, mailserver, DNS server and control panel ISPConfig.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2012
We are also offring Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 a Windows Server 2012 R2, both Datacenter edition. You can choose from theCzech and English version. The customer has access to the server with full rights via Terminal Services (Remote Desktop Connection) as Administrator.
This operating system requires a valid license, the customer must rent license from us 50 CZK / month / module.
Due to system requirements of Windows Server 2008/2012 it is require to order min. 2 modules for this operating system, otherwise the system will not be operational.
The last option is to order a virtual server without an operating system. The customer can, after the server establishment in the customer administration, mount ISO CD/DVD by they own choosing and be able to boot from the ISO CD/DVD with a custom installation of any system.
If a customer installed an operating system that requires a license, the customer must own such a license and be able to present it to us upon our request.
CAUTION! On the VPS is not possible to install any of your Microsoft Windows installation media. On the VPS is possible to pre-install Windows Server 2008/2012 licensed leased from us only. Users ISO images with any Microsoft Windows are not acceptable.
virtIO, IDE emulation
We support two methods for operating systems access to disks and network card in virtual server.
The older method emulates IDE devices - operating system do not need special support, he sees it as an IDE, which are emulated. But this emulation has high overhead and disk that can not reach I/O performance high. However, it works on any operating system.
The newer method uses paravirtualization and virtio drivers, which enables the operating system to be aware that it is virtualized, and the disk and network card are can be directly accessed without emulation. But this methode requires the installation of virtIO drivers. This allows to reach much higher I/O performance (according to our measurements, triple more).
Modern Linux distributions do not have any problem with virtio no need to do anything (RHEL, Fedora, CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, openSUSE). FreeBSD does not support it by default, you must manually install the drivers. Our pre-installed Windows Server also use virtio.
If you choose VPS with preinstalled Linux operating system it will be with virtio. If you order a VPS without OS, you can choose whether the VPS run in the IDE or virtio. If you install Linux, select virtio. If you want to install FreeBSD, select IDE.
